Our Christmas Exam

Why do we derive satisfaction from helping others? It often takes precious time, personal effort and periodically money. YouTube, Tweets and newspaper headlines are full of stories of people “doing good”. Examples range from musicians offering free concerts in subways, to volunteers helping those in need, to philanthropist giving money.

When we were young, and did something for someone, (better yet when no one told us to or we were told we didn’t have to) we found our parents and elders very affirming. If we are honest, we felt pretty good about ourselves as well.

There is a reason that most people instinctively dislike Ebenezer Scrooge in The Christmas Carol, or Mr. Potter in “It’s a Wonderful Life”. We cannot live in a social cocoon isolated from and impervious to those who need our help. We have heard since childhood, that it is better to give than receive. It’s not just a saying from the Bible, but this principle is embraced by the secular world and other religions as well.

The essence of the Christmas story is God’s gift to a needy world.

In all this I have given you an example that by such work we must support the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, for He himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ Acts 20:35 RSV

I think that the Christmas season puts us all to the test – do we really believe it is better to give than receive? Do we experience it as true? Do we act on it?

Our sense of being blessed and satisfied may be contingent on our answers. Is this an exam we dare not fail?

Merry Christmas
