AL MCKAY is doing a great work with the marginalized and poor. He describes his mission as being shaped by the Word and led by the Spirit. His desire is to see the transformation of residents and non-residents of the Down town East side (students, graduates, and others) into fully committed followers of Jesus.
What do we do?
- Explore God's compassion for the poor and His commitment to justice
- Encourage one another to see all people as image bearers of God and dearly loved of Him
- Engage in the study and application of the scriptures with the intention that lives and communities will be transformed
- Examine what God is doing in the world and demonstrated creative opportunities for people to align their lives with that activity
- Emphasize our common humanity across race and ethnicity
- Evaluate our own lives, asking the Holy Spirit to show us our own destructive behaviours, personally and communally and how our choices impact the world
- Enjoy community as we study, work, pray, and interact with some of the people and organizations of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside
Through Urban Coalition, participants’ lives will be sensitized and committed to discovering Jesus in unfamiliar places. Urban Coalition folks will learn how to exegete the scriptures, the culture and the community.
By standing with the marginalized, resisting our addiction to security and individual comfort and seeking liberation for ourselves and others from the ever prevalent cultural landscape to consume, Urban Coalition participants will see the benefit of having their spirituality informed by the margins.
It is our desire that participants in Urban Coalition will become life long lovers of Jesus, Life long learners of the scriptures, culture and community and life long influencers of God’s Kingdom reflecting and living Kingdom Values of Grace, Justice, Liberation and Reconciliation.
Urban Coalition will be characterized by a welcoming posture to all peoples. We will partner with other urban workers and organizations to be part of God’s influencing work in the inner city.
Urban Coalition seeks to hear the cries of the community and respond to those cries with a posture of loving one’s neighbour and biblical justice. Urban Coalition seeks to not only hear the cries but to have eyes that see those in the community as eternal beings created in God’s image.
Urban Coalition desires to be an instrument used of our God to foster wholeness and health in the Downtown Eastside. Urban Coalition seeks to build communities in which dignity and respect are given to all with the goal to become fully human and fully committed to Jesus Christ.
