A Changed Life Can Lead to a Changed City

Dear Friends,
We have posted a few photos from this year's 59th Annual BC Provincial Prayer Breakfast. The event featured two outstanding speakers, a sold-out dinner the evening before, and a packed breakfast the following morning. I have had the privilege of attending and being involved with this amazing event for over 30 years. We are the only province to host a dinner the night before the breakfast, and we still have the largest event in Canada.
What has made this event work and be such an effective witness for faith? Why do so many people bring their friends every year?
Let me offer four reasons:
First, this event is quietly sustained and prayed for by a small group of committed believers whose work is largely unseen, yet whose contributions are foundational to its success.
Second, we invite leaders from every sector of our province—including business, academia, the non-profit sector, and government.
Third, the wider Christian community—Protestants, Catholics, Orthodox, and believers from many Christian traditions—chooses to come together in a spirit of fellowship.
Fourth, our head table and speakers are always lay leaders rather than clergy. They are asked one key question: How has your personal faith in Jesus impacted your life and work? Speakers authentically share their lives, including both their failures and successes.
Over the years, our speakers have included:
A woman who worked for 33 years for the City of Vancouver. She pioneered new ways to address the problem of homelessness and was awarded the Freedom of the City.
A retired Lt. General who battled depression after serving in Rwanda.
A successful rock band member who struggled with mental health after a near-death experience and has now spoken to over 800,000 students.
A young man born with only one leg, who overcame every obstacle to win a national championship in wrestling.
A renowned Vancouver doctor who received the Order of Canada for his contributions to HIV/AIDS research.
A National award winning East Vancouver high school teacher who taught drama for 40 years decides to start a boys club for kids who are dropping out of school and results in 100's of graduating, learning life-skills training, and pursuing higher education in both academic and trade skills.
The Prayer Breakfast is a time for the leaders of the province to pause, pray for our province, and hear authentic, engaging, and inspiring stories from fellow leaders.

These speakers remind all of us that faith in God can make a genuine difference in who we are and what we do. May we each be ready, in our own spheres of influence, to give the same honest witness.
