Empty Arms and a Full Heart
December 2025
Christmas Eve was fast approaching and the shop windows were laden. Window shopping was a pastime in this particular neighbourhood, where real want was just around the corner. *
A young man and his daughter, barely waist high, were admiring sleds, tool kits, and hockey sticks, and—a doll. Not just any doll, but “the doll”, just waiting for someone to take her home. The father had explained that there were only so many toys in the world and maybe the doll was already spoken for.
The daughter seemed to accept this wisdom when suddenly she saw a man walking towards them. He had a long white beard accentuated by his long black coat. His black hat failed to contain his white hair.
Dropping her father’s hand, she rushed to the stranger. “Oh, Santa!” she exclaimed, grasping his hand in hers. The stranger stood stoically still and listened while she explained how she would give that doll a good home, if only—. Her father caught up and took her away, apologizing.
On Christmas morning her stocking had a sewing kit, a book about Bethlehem, and in the toe, an apple and a big orange. She was happy and so were her parents.
A knock came to the door and she rushed to open it. There stood the tall man with a white beard and dressed in a black coat. And in his arms the doll. The little girl’s joy was indescribable. Her parents were overcome.
Taking the older man’s hand, her father said, simply, “Thank you. Thank you so much, Rabbi.”
And, like the wise men from the east, the Rabbi returned home with empty arms and a full heart. (Matthew 2:1)
Who do we identify with in this story?
Do we desperately want something we can’t afford? Or, are we the family member or close friend watching someone we love who can't afford what they want? Or, could we be like the Rabbi who is open to the needs of the world and we help where and when we can?
Perhaps, at different times of our life, we have identified with all three characters, as an observer, giver, or recipient. Christmas reminds all of us of the gift of Jesus' birth. Jesus in Hebrew means “God saves”
Let us have eyes like the Rabbi and a heart to assist the needs around us. May each of us after Christmas be found with “empty arms and a full heart.” *
Merry Christmas,
Blessings,
Tom
